Because it’s the 6 month anniversary of Seasoning, and because I am loving you being here with me on The Kitchen Bookshelf (maybe even because it’s just been my birthday and I am on holiday atm): I have decided I would like to send a little something to the paid subscribers here.
If you have Seasoning you will already know that it is abundant with Patricia Niven’s exquisite photography of seasonal vegetables and fruits. These started as off-the-cuff shots she was doing to fill spare moments in the recipe shoot.
In the early days of explaining to people what my new book was going to be about, I’d show Patsy’s shot of the January King Cabbages by way of explanation. I remember doing just that to Jeremy Lee and Fergus Henderson, over glasses of red wine outside Quo Vadis on a chilly day that was really too cold to be outside but Fergus wanted a fag. I’ll never forget the look on Fergus’ face when he saw the cabbages.
But even at that point these produce shots had no purpose or destiny in the pages of Seasoning. And while we all knew how beautiful they were we also had no idea how we’d find space for them in an already packed book. And then in one of the final phases of edits, Celine Hughes, the publisher, and I sat round my kitchen table and landed on where they should fit. I couldn’t imagine Seasoning without them.
We have had four of the veg shots - one for each season - made into postcards and a set of these are what I would like to gift to each of you.
Aren’t they gorgeous? Even more so irl. So: I will post the set of four postcards - for free - to any paid subscribers, or anyone who becomes a paid subscriber by the end of September.
If you would like to receive a set of Seasoning postcards in the post, please just send me your postal address on private message here or via email to: angelaclutton@yahoo.co.uk
