Cookbook Club online event: Sunday 14th July, 8.30 - 9.30am
The cookbooks of and about Italy
UPDATED: This event was just a joy. I absolutely love that these meet-ups can become the place for a conversation that can crosses discussion around regionality, food and geo-politics, authenticity and globalisation; but then mention of the Tiramisu World Cup fits in too. It was a great start to my day and I hope the same for everyone who joined in.
If you missed it and would like to catch-up you can watch it back here. (With apologies for the fact that Zoom ate the first few mins of the recording where we did all the hellos and where/how-are-yous, so it feel like a slightly abrupt start x)
And - these are the books we discussed - in no particular order other than of my scribbles. If I’ve missed noting one down then do let me know in the comments!
Podere Il Casale - Family, Food and Farming in the Tuscan Countryside by Robin Bretseber / Claudio Ippolito
The Classic Food of Northern Italy by Anna Del Conte
Five Quarters and Two Kitchens by Rachel Roddy
Marcella Hazan - various
Leaves From Our Tuscan Kitchen by Janet Ross
Alastair Little’s Italian Kitchen
Plus more general conversation that included Antonio Carluccio, Gennaro Contaldo, Jamie Oliver, Delia Smith, Carla Tomasi, Stanley Tucci and Big Night, and the Tiramisu World Cup. Like I said - joy x
Coffee, conversation and Italian cookbooks. I’m honestly not sure I can think of a better way to start a Sunday. If you feel the same then this is for you:
A digital meet-up for us all to share thoughts and book recommendations on this month’s cookbook club theme: books we love on all aspects and regions of Italian food, cookery and food culture. Our discussion is going to be about the genre, rather than a particular book.
The format is basically like any other book club gathering where the members share thoughts, ideas and opinions - just with food and cookbooks at its heart (and therefore even better). We want this to be an hour of lovely, relaxed, insightful cookbook conversation.
When and where
On: Sunday 14th July, 8.30am - 9.30am BST
We are meeting online via Zoom. The session will be recorded and (probably) made available for the wider The Kitchen Bookshelf community to watch back. If you would rather it wasn't, then please do let me know.
Here is the link to join the event: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/86956571442
Send me a message if you would like to join in (paid subscribers only):
What are we talking about?
The meet-up is focussed on this month’s cookbook club theme: books we love on all aspects and regions of Italian food, cookery and food culture
They could be old books (maybe really old…), or newly published ones … in Italian or English …. household names or more hidden voices … I have shared some of my faves and really can’t wait to discover more through yours.
What do I need to do to prepare?
It is not essential to have cooked something to talk about. This meet-up is for sharing thoughts about books more broadly rather than a particular book or set of dishes.
That said, Rachel Roddy has shared with us her recipe from Five Quarters: Recipes and Notes from a Kitchen in Rome for her breakfast maritozzi…

What will the format be?
I will do general hello’s and talk a little about the theme. Then it is over to you. I will be encouraging lots of open conversation so please do come with ideas of books you love and why. If there’s a book or author you really want to make sure you get the chance to talk about then you can let me know that ahead of time.
Who is coming?
This meet-up is only for paid subscribers to The Kitchen Bookshelf. Places are limited to ensure we are not too large a group for comfortable conversation.
Send me a message if you would like to register for a place:
I’m really looking forward to seeing you there.
