Mother Tongue - Flavours of a Second Generation by Gurdeep Loyal
There aren’t too many times that I open a cookbook and have an overwhelming feeling that it is about to offer up something genuinely new and fresh and interesting. Mother Tongue by Gurdeep Loyal was one of those times.
It is not food writers’ fault that so many cookbooks seem to fit a similar kind of mould. Cookbooks are expensive to make, they are a risk for publishers to take, and so inevitably publishers seek to minimise the risk and play things a little safe. Which makes it all the more impressive that Mother Tongue feels like a new direction. Impressive-er still when you consider it is Gurdeep’s debut book.
